This is a difficult conversation, but it’s one that must be approached with care and compassion. We were able to build trust because we shared our own personal experiences, which helped establish credibility. If you don’t have a similar story to share, consult with Human Resources to ensure you’re equipped with the right resources and support to offer your team member.
Most importantly, check in regularly so the individual knows they are seen and supported. Approach the situation with empathy—not as a fact-finding mission. You don’t need to know the details of their personal life to show that you care and to create a safe, respectful space for them at work.
